The Extreme Light Infrastructure Names a Chief Information Officer

The position reflects the growing importance of data, computation and digital systems in modern large-scale scientific infrastructures, particularly those operating complex experimental platforms such as high-power laser facilities.

“Modern science facilities depend on digital systems as much as on physical instruments,” said Allen Weeks, Director General of ELI. “At ELI we generate and analyse increasingly complex datasets and operate highly sophisticated experimental infrastructure. This role ensures that our computing, data and digital platforms evolve in step with the science.”

The Extreme Light Infrastructure, a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) is a flagship for high-power laser research. As an international research infrastructure located in Central Europe, ELI represents a major strategic investment in Europe’s scientific and technological competitiveness.

As CIO, Klein will lead the development and deployment of ELI’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategy across the organisation. His responsibilities include building a unified ICT framework covering data processing and storage, networking, cybersecurity, governance and high-performance scientific computing infrastructure.

The role is designed to integrate digital systems across ELI’s facilities and ensure they support the organisation’s expanding scientific programme. This includes strengthening the infrastructure required for data-intensive experiments, advanced simulation and emerging applications such as AI-driven data processing.

“ELI represents a unique combination of scientific ambition and advanced technology,” Klein said. “My goal is to build a unified and resilient digital environment that supports world-class research while providing the flexibility needed for future scientific and technological developments.”

Klein brings more than 30 years of international experience in telecommunications, banking and digital services. He recently served as Group CIO and CTO of Fortuna Entertainment Group (2021–2025), where he led digital transformation initiatives across multiple countries. Earlier roles include and CTIO of T-Mobile Czech Republic, CIO at Moneta Money BankSenior Vice President for Service Delivery at Deutsche Telekom.

During his career he has overseen major cloud and software applications migrations, cybersecurity architecture, business continuity and disaster-recovery frameworks, as well as several data-centre and organizational transformations.

“There was enormous interest from applicants in this role at ELI,” said Weeks, “Vladimír brings very senior experience from demanding commercial environments into world-leading scientific facilities at a time when more than ever data is our key product.”

The CIO role will harmonise ICT standards across the organisation’s facilities while strengthening governance, compliance and operational resilience for mission-critical scientific operations. Klein will also serve as a member of the ELI Management Board, ensuring that digital strategy is closely integrated with the organisation’s scientific and operational leadership.
