Prof. Dr. Gábor SzabóManaging Director As of January 1, 2020, Prof. Dr. Gábor Szabó physicist, university professor and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has been assigned as Managing Director of ELI-ALPS Research Institute. From 2006-2010 Professor Szabó played a key role in developing the scientific proposal that resulted in ELI ALPS Laser Research Institute being established in Szeged, Hungary. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of ELI-ALPS since 2010, Professor Szabó has been actively involved in developing the scientific strategy and laser infrastructure of our institute. His scientific expertise includes generation of ultrashort light-pulses, ultra-fast laser spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and the medical applications of lasers amongst others. Prof. Dr. Gábor Szabó was the Rector of the University of Szeged from 2010-2018. |

Prof. Katalin Varjú
Science Director Prof. Katalin Varjú is the Science Director of ELI ALPS, effective 18th March, 2019. Prof. Varjú graduated as a physicist with distinction at JATE University, Szeged, Hungary. She received a physics PhD from the University of Szeged in 2002 with the highest honours. She habilitated at the University of Szeged in 2015. She has worked at the University of Szeged, from 1999, where she holds now an associate professorship. She has been a visiting scientist at Lund University in Sweden (2003-2005) supported by the Marie Curie Programme. Prof. Varjú has been working for the ELI programme from the start of the project. She was active in the preparatory stages of the ELI proposals and co-edited the first Scientific Case for ELI-ALPS in 2011. After the establishment of ELI-Hu Ltd. she acted as group leader, later as division head. Since 2019 she is the Science Director of ELI ALPS research institute, responsible for the implementation and operation of the research infrastructure. Her main research interests are in optical and atomic physics: concerning the propagation of femtosecond laser pulses, nonlinear interactions of light with matter, high-order harmonic generation and attosecond pulse (train) production, and its applications to study electron dynamics.
